What does one WhatsApp chat really cost you?
Put in your weekly ad spend and the WhatsApp conversations your ads started. You'll see your cost per chat week by week, the week it crossed your warning line, and the most you can pay per chat before the first sale stops covering it.

Example: a UAE transport company's Urdu and Hindi WhatsApp campaign: one seven-day stretch in late August, then two later weekly reports. Real numbers, client not named.
Nothing you type leaves this page. The full story behind the example: how the report caught a doubling cost per lead.

How this is worked out
Cost per chat for each week is ad spend ÷ chats started. The cheapest week is your benchmark, because it is the best your ads have done for your audience.
The warning line sits at your cheapest week plus the percent you set (30% unless you change it). The checker names the first week after your cheapest that crossed it, and also warns when cost has gone up two weeks in a row.
Cost per real lead is cost per chat ÷ lead rate. Cost per new customer is cost per chat ÷ (lead rate × close rate).
Break-even cost per chat is average sale × margin × lead rate × close rate. Below that number, the first sale pays for the ads. If your customers buy again, your real limit is higher: work out what one customer is worth with the customer lifetime value calculator.
Why cost per WhatsApp chat goes up
On a campaign I ran for a UAE transport company, the cost per conversation was AED 0.63 in one seven-day stretch in late August, then 0.95 and 1.36 in two later weekly reports. My diagnosis was the ads, not the audience. Two things stood out:
- The ads had got old. So the fix to try first is new ads, not a new audience.
- One old ad was taking most of the money. In the last week, 77% of the spend went to one Urdu image ad at about $0.40 a chat (the account bills in US dollars), while a full-screen Story ad at about $0.22 got 5.5%.
A separate lesson from the same account: when the Urdu and Hindi ads shared one ad set, the Hindi ad got under 1% of the spend, then nothing. Give each language its own campaign and budget.
Questions
What is cost per messaging conversation in Meta Ads?
Your ad spend divided by the number of WhatsApp, Messenger or Instagram conversations your ads started. Ads Manager shows it as cost per messaging conversation started.
Why is my cost per WhatsApp conversation going up?
On the click-to-WhatsApp campaign behind the example on this page, the causes were ads that had run too long and one old ad taking most of the budget. Check the age of your ads and how the budget is split before you change the audience.
How do I reduce my cost per messaging conversation?
Have new ads ready before the old ones tire, stop one old ad from taking most of the budget, and give each language its own campaign and budget so the smaller one is not starved.
What is a good cost per WhatsApp conversation?
There is no reliable public benchmark by country or industry, so I won't invent one. The number that matters is your own break-even: fill in "Turn chats into money" above and the checker shows it.
Does Meta's "last 7 days" include today?
No. The last 3 and last 7 day ranges in Ads Manager end yesterday. Check today's numbers before you decide a campaign has stopped delivering.
